What is extinction rebellion los angeles?

Extinction Rebellion is an international movement that uses non-violent civil disobedience to achieve radical change in order to minimize the risk of human extinction and ecological collapse. Extinction Rebellion Los Angeles (XRLA) is a local cell of this international movement which has over 400 independent cells on five continents.

Our world is in crisis. Life itself is under threat. Yet every crisis contains the possibility of transformation. Across the world, heralded by the young, people are waking up and coming together.

We are a wake up call to L.A. and to the world! We are XR and you are us. Join us!

OUR FUTURE WILL BE WON BY DEGREES

XR International - About Us

— OUR MISSION —

To spark and sustain a spirit of collective, creative rebellion which will enable much needed changes in our political, economic, and social landscape. We work to transform our society into one that is compassionate, inclusive, kind, sustainable, equitable, and interpersonally connected.

— Our Demands —

1. Tell the Truth

We demand that our government must tell the truth about the climate and wider ecological emergency, and it must work to reverse all policies not in alignment with that position. We must work alongside the media to communicate the urgency for change in the face of imminent danger, including what individuals, communities, and businesses need to do.

2. ACT NOW

California's governments must enact legally-binding policy measures to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2025, and to reduce consumption levels and ecological impacts across the state. They must cooperate internationally so that the global economy runs on no more than half a planet's worth of resources per year.

3. BEYOND POLITICS

We do not trust our government to make the bold, swift, and long-term actions necessary to achieve societal transformation. Instead, we demand Citizens' Assembly to oversee these changes, creating a democracy fit for the purpose of averting climate catastrophe and empowering the voices and concerns of citizens over politicians.

4. JUST TRANSITION

We demand a just transition away from fossil fuels that prioritizes indigenous sovereignty, reparations, and remediation, led by and for people of color and impacted communities to put an end to structural environmental injustice. We demand that ecosystems be granted the legal right to thrive and regenerate in perpetuity. Repairing the effects of historical and ongoing ecocide is the first step to preventing a catastrophic global extinction, and growing a world that is livable and just for all.

Understanding the urgency: "If we don't protect nature, we can't protect ourselves." (5:34)

— Our Principles —

1. WE HAVE A SHARED VISION OF CHANGE

Creating a world that is fit for generations to come.

2. WE SET OUR MISSION ON WHAT IS NECESSARY —

mobilizing 3.5% of the population to achieve system change - using ideas such as "Momentum-driven organizing" to achieve this.

3. WE NEED A REGENERATIVE CULTURE

We will model a community that is healthy, resilient, and adaptable to ecological change.

4. WE OPENLY CHALLENGE OURSELVES AND OUR TOXIC SYSTEM

Leaving our comfort zones to take action for change. Everyone must question their role in the structures that threaten the survival of our planet.

5. WE VALUE REFLECTING AND LEARNING

Following an ongoing cycle of action, reflection, learning, and planning for more action. We will take lessons from our elders and other popular movements in service of this goal.

6. WE WELCOME EVERYONE AND EVERY PART OF EVERYONE

We work to actively create safer and more accessible spaces, open to any and all dedicated to our principles.

7. We actively reimagine and recast power dynamics and structures

With the goal of breaking down hierarchies, to foster the equitable and just participation of all.

8. WE AVOID BLAMING AND SHAMING

Our present system of governance and economics is toxic. We acknowledge that we all play a role in perpetuating this system, but no one individual or group is to blame.

9. We are a non-violent cell in a non-violent network

And will exclusively use non-violent strategies and tactics as the most effective way to bring about change.

10. We are an autonomous part of a decentralized whole

We collectively create the structures we need to challenge power.

**Any who agree to these principles are welcome to participate in our movement.**

We refuse to bequeath a dying planet to future generations by failing to act now.

We act in peace with ferocious love of these lands in our hearts.

REBEL AGREEMENT

All who participate in XR actions must abide by our Rebel Agreement - a precis of our Action Consensus in the form of a flyer that reminds rebels of our basic agreements and that can be distributed to the public at street-based actions.
